What is Effective Public Speaking?
The act or process of making speeches in public is called Effective Public Speaking. It may be public gathering or business conferences.
Attributes of an Effective Public Speaker
Integrity – The Speaker should be honest and sincere. A speaker should be one who can be trusted and does not involve in immoral activities. A person of sound character can be confident and teach well. The audience will listen to a trustworthy person and not someone who is distrustful.
Credibility – Establishing credibility is very important as a public speaker. People should believe what you are saying and should have high esteem about you. Credibility establishes audience acceptability to the speaker. People want to connect with someone who is trustworthy and faithful and avoids unlawful activities.
Skill – The speaker should have the power to influence and motivate the participant towards the desired goal. The skill can be enhanced by enhancing knowledge and getting more feedback from the audience.
Self-Confidence – A speaker should be confident when he stands in front of the public. You should not feel nervous neither show nervousness in your voice.The audience wants you to succeed, you just need to believe that.
Effective and Powerful Language – A speaker should keep track of his speech by concentrating on the language. There should be no unnecessary points. They should not deviate from the topic. No long pauses. The audience loses track of the speech. The speaker should be well read and well prepared so that he does not speak something which is not logical and wrong.
Sincerity – A speaker should be genuine and honest. You should inform, educate and persuade your audience. Give them information that will solve the problem and help them achieve a goal that they want.
Enthusiasm – A speaker should be enthusiastic about his speech. Then only he can transfer the enthusiasm to the audience. Be enthusiastic about your subject and show it through your face and voice. Your power, pitch and pace to reflect your enthusiasm.
Don’t bluff or show off Just be yourself. Show true enthusiasm and deliver a strong message.
Appropriate Dress – Dress appropriately. Don’t wear something too tight or too loose. Wear something which will be comfortable for you as well as for your audience.
No stylish outfits as it distracts the audience. It’s always better to go for normal looking clothes which look good on you.
Cool and calm composure Don’t appear stressed – A speaker needs to be cool and calm so that whatever he gives is received by the audience in a good manner. If the speaker is stressed the audience will be uncomfortable and will be distracted and shut off their ears and start dozing.
Identifying your goal as a public speaker
The ultimate goal as a public speaker is to get the message across to the audience in a clear manner.
The goal is:
1) Informing, persuading, motivating & entertaining the audience.
2) Satisfy the audience.
3) Remove all difficulties and doubts of the audience.
4) Do full justice to the speech and pass on as much information as possible in a given time frame. But avoid information overload.
5) End the speech on time.
